Increase/ Albanian citizens pay 20 million euros more in property taxes

The increase in property taxes has begun to have its first effects on citizens' pockets. Official data from the state budget show that the country's municipalities collected nearly 55 million euros from the property tax, which is the highest figure in the last decade.

Referring to official data from the Ministry of Finance, in relation to the same period of 2023, the tax on buildings has supplied local self-government units with nearly 13 million euros more, marking an increase of 31.7%.

While in relation to the 2024 plan for the 8-month period, there was an overrun of about 20 million euros, or 55.5% more than was anticipated.

The need for more revenue and the need to pay off the stock of arrears, but also the approach of general elections, has made municipalities pay more attention to the collection of tax on buildings, although the application of the tax has not yet started according to market value.

In other words, in 8 months, 94.5% of the entire annual plan for the collection of this tax has been realized, where in total 5.7 billion ALL is expected to be collected.

This performance was influenced by the increase in reference prices in the country's main municipalities, but also by the increase in construction areas. Tirana Municipality has the greatest weight in the collection of this tax, followed by municipalities in coastal areas and other large units.

The government plans the preparation of the fiscal cadastre and the implementation of taxation based on the market value for buildings starting from 2026, as well as the implementation of taxation based on the market value for plots starting from 2028, including completing the legal and regulatory framework, the finalization of the Fiscal Cadastre Information System with interoperability and integration with other systems, addressing personnel requirements and raising human resources capacities./Scan tv
