Changing borders / Varhelyi: 'Non paper' is not true, Rama brings back
Oliver Varhelyi and Edi Rama

At the joint conference between Prime Minister Edi Rama and EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi also spoke about the idea of changing the borders in the Balkans or otherwise "non paper".

Asked what he knows about this document, the Commissioner said it is not true, as otherwise the EU would have been concerned. He said that the redefinition of borders serves other purposes and that no serious person puts such ideas on the table.

"It's like a season where such 'non paper' documents have flourished. We are convinced that none are true. If we were real we would be worried. Redefining the borders in the Western Balkans we all know where it takes us.

No serious person would put such a thing on the table, especially in this region where we are. I do not think they are real ideas, maybe they serve some other purposes, they have been announced by those people to whom this 'non paper' has been attributed. "I envy all those who have time to draft such letters," said Varhelyi.

Commenting on this issue, Rama returned to the idea of "Regional Schengen". He said that this initiative is supported by the EU, while he ironically said that "We must reduce the production of history and increase the production of the economy".

The Prime Minister said that there are many opportunities that should be used, while calling it a waste of time to focus on these topics. Unproductive conflicts have left us behind, he added.

"We must reduce the production of history and increase the production of the economy. Our third mandate will be focused on reducing the history and stories that here in Albania for 30 years we produce at full capacity, taking a lot of energy people.

As for the Balkans, my vision and conviction is declared Regional Schengen is the way we should walk every day. As we civilly discuss our disagreements. Disagreements should not prevent us from supporting economic growth, social support, and a basis for the future that will serve the children of the region.

Regional Schengen is an EU-supported project. There are so many opportunities that we have to make the most of it, it is a pity to waste time producing stories that lead us nowhere. Unproductive conflicts have left us behind.

We should not re-Balkanize while we are in the middle of the road with Balkanization and Europeanization. While conflicts take their time to resolve. "I agree with the Commissioner that any attempt to give magic keys that open the doors of the future with a drop of a pencil leads only to what we have seen in the past in the Balkans and that should never be repeated ," Rama said.
